1876 Prague Cello
4/4 Violincello on rare 'small' pattern
Description: Small pattern full-size cello. The back is two-piece maple, semi-slab cut with faint figure in the lower half. The ribs are similar the back with rather more curl and figure. The top is of spruce, two pieces, with rather wide, irregular grain widening away from the middle. The neck and pegbox are original crowned by a rather large volute. The varnish is reddish-brown in color. Despite the presence of several well-mended cracks, the condition of the cello is good. Label : Antonius Sitt ad forman Antonio Stradivari fecit Prague 1876 (includes maker’s seal comprised of two concentric circles containing a cross and the letters “A” and “S”) Note: there is no basis to contest the label authenticity.
